How a GLP-1 weight-loss clinic works

A clinic that prescribes GLP-1 medication should do more than write a script. A licensed clinician checks whether semaglutide or tirzepatide is safe for you, orders baseline labs, starts the lowest dose, and adjusts it every few weeks while managing nausea and other GLP-1 side effects. The good ones also coach what the drug can’t: protein intake, holding muscle while you lose fat, and what to do when the scale stalls.

Most clinics follow the FDA labels on who qualifies: a BMI of 30, or 27 with a condition like high blood pressure or sleep apnea. In the trials behind these drugs, STEP-1 for semaglutide and SURMOUNT-1 for tirzepatide, people lost about 15% and 20% of their body weight in a year alongside diet and activity changes. A provider who skips your history and writes a prescription anyway is cutting a corner that matters.

Most of this care happens over video now. GLP-1s aren’t controlled substances, so a clinician licensed in your state can assess you and send the script to a nearby pharmacy without an office visit.
