Medicaid (weight loss)
Covered
As of April 2026, North Carolina Medicaid covers GLP-1s for weight loss, usually with prior authorization and BMI criteria, on top of the standard diabetes coverage. Employer and private plans vary; coverage is a plan-design choice, not a state rule.

Medicaid status above is for weight-loss use and was compiled April 2026 from KFF and public Medicaid trackers; only 13 states cover it and several are mid-change, so confirm North Carolina’s current Medicaid and plan rules before booking. An injectable medication for adults with type 2 diabetes. Same molecule as Zepbound.

Mounjaro is the brand name Eli Lilly uses for tirzepatide approved for type 2 diabetes. It is a once-weekly subcutaneous injection and the first approved dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist. It activates two gut-hormone pathways rather than one. The identical molecule, marketed as Zepbound, is the FDA-approved formulation for chronic weight management.[2][3]

In the SURPASS-2 head-to-head trial, tirzepatide produced greater HbA1c reductions and greater weight loss than semaglutide 1 mg across all doses. Across the SURPASS program, tirzepatide lowered HbA1c by approximately 1.8 to 2.6 percentage points. Mounjaro is approved as an adjunct to diet and exercise for glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes.[1]
